NSU's Oller named Freshman All-American

NATCHITOCHES, LA (NSU Sports Information) -

Northwestern State's Adam Oller, the Southland Conference's Freshman of the Year, was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, the publication announced on Wednesday.

The right-handed pitcher was one of two hurlers picked from the Southland Conference, and one of four overall picks from the league.   He was one of 27 starting pitchers picked among all Division I schools in the country.

The Conroe, Texas (Concordia Lutheran HS) native is the first Demon to be picked as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American since Chad Sheppard was honored in 2009.  Dereck Cloeren and Kyle Broughton were both picked after the 2005 season.

"We could not be happier as a program, or more proud of Adam and what it means for his own personal accomplishments, but also for our program," said Demon head coach Lane Burroughs.

Northwestern State finished the 2014 season tied with the biggest turnaround in school history after a 33-26 record and an appearance in the SLC Tournament semifinals.  The Demons finished with a 19-11 record in league play, and completed a 14-game turnaround for the largest in Southland Conference history.

NSU's trip to the league tournament and 30 wins were both firsts for the program since the 2010 season.

"He was vital to the success and the great turnaround we had this season," said Burroughs. "This also speaks volumes of our program as to where it is heading, how bright our future is and the kind of players we are bring to Northwestern."

Oller completed the season with a 6-2 record and a 2.44 earned run average in 16 appearances and 13 starts.  He finished the regular season as the league's top freshman in earned run average, and third among all classes.  His six wins and 86.2 innings pitched in the regular season ranked 11th and 15th, respectively.

He also fanned 58 batters and walked only 20 on the season.

"Adam has worked very hard from day one, and his attitude has been outstanding," said Burroughs. "His work ethic has been at the front of the pack, and that's why the accolades are starting to come to him."

He had the best ERA among starters on NSU's squad.  He also had the most games started (13), most complete games (3) and most innings (92.1).  The freshman took over as the series-opening starter in the second conference series, and NSU was 7-2 in opening games after that point.

"Again, we just couldn't be more proud of Adam, and this accomplishment," said Burroughs.

He joined Sam Odom from Sam Houston State as the only pitchers from the Southland Conference.  Samuel Capielano and Hezekiah Randolph, both from New Orleans, were also named to the team.
