More concerns tonight about door to door salesmen in the area. Two men have been issued citations for selling door to door without a permit. The men claimed to be selling pest control services. It's one of those quiet streets in the University area where people tend to know and look out for each other. For more than 40 years the Retired Senior Volunteer Program provided free help from dedicated seniors-- giving their time to a wide range of local agencies and businesses.  But the federal grant that funded that program starting in 1972 is no more.  So the Calcasieu Police Jury is starting its own program with local funds.

Jury President Dennis Scott predicts it will be better.

"Better is when local government takes total control of something instead of it trickling down.  So, though we enjoyed the funding, I think we're going to do a much better job when it's controlled and funded locally where your money takes care of local people,"said Scott.

Adele Mart is the operations manager of the Calcasieu Police Jury Human Services Department. She says the program keeps seniors active and involved.

"We have volunteers that do computer inputting for agencies.  We have some that go to the animal shelter and take dogs for a walk.   We have individuals that help homebound  senior citizens.  I mean there's just an array of different services that they do that is just so important not only to the community but individuals in their households," said Mart.

Police Juror Kevin Guidry says the program doesn't just keep older people busy.  It provides valuable free help for agencies that may not have money to hire an extra person.

"What vital assets they bring to this community, with the knowledge that they have throughout the years being here on earth and we want to use that to our advantage.  And what this does.  It puts them in a situation to help someone,"said Guidry.

The volunteer program aims to encourage those 55 years or older who are retired or semi-retired to participate more fully in the community.

Volunteers are asked to attend one of two start up meetings. They are at 10 am June 18th and July 2 at the Allen August Multi Purpose Annex on Moeling street.
The name the program and logo contest is from now to August first.
Send entries to the volunteer program at 1155 Ryan Street, Second floor, Lake Charles, La. 70601.

The winner of the contest will receive a prize. For more information call 337-721-4020.
