The annual Juneteenth celebration will be held June 28 at the Lake Charles Civic Center. This year's theme is "The Essence of Freedom." Doors open at noon.

The event marks the 149th anniversary of when slaves in Galveston, Texas, received word of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The festival serves as a celebration of African American culture and achievements.

Activities will include a barbecue cook-off, lip sync and celebrity look-alike contests and a family fun zone.

Performers will include Frankie Beverly, Mel Walters, Andre Pitre, Tommy Hammond and Bel-Ami.

Residents all over Calcasieu Parish are starting to catch on to a group of people who collect money at busy intersections. It's all over Facebook: questions about a group of men wearing safety vests and collecting money. You can find them at the intersection of Prien Lake Road and Highway 14 in Lake Charles, Beglis Parkway and Highway 90 in Sulphur, and most notably, Highway 171 and 378 in Moss Bluff.
