New child care service to open in Jackson Co.

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Two months after a report from child advocates detailed the lack of child care services available in Jackson County, the owners of a licensed child care facility in Jonesboro announced the opening of another location in Newport.

Patrick and LaJaunda Bean, the owners of Bean's Tots and Toddlers Learning Center, plan to open at the end of June 2014 in response to the need in Jackson County.

The Newport learning center will be the third location in addition to the two already open in Jonesboro.

LaJaunda and her husband were already considering opening a center in Newport and moved forward after hearing about how some of the moms were making due.

"The parents that we serve, some of them go to (Arkansas State University). They work in our local factories here. They are on the (Transitional Employment Assistance) program," she said.

"They were quitting their jobs. A lot of them couldn't work. They couldn't go to school because they didn't have that quality care."

Newport resident Jessica Rucker is one of the parents affected by the shortage of child care in Jackson County.

"Their waiting list is like a year and a half. It's really hard for parents that can't get into that daycare to find childcare."

If you don't remember we just had an election last month, don't feel bad, voter turnout was abysmal.  However, that doesn't change the cost of holding the election, meaning when hardly anyone shows up to vote, the cost per voter who actually casts a ballot is high. In fact, here in Calcasieu Parish, it would be cheaper to send each voter to see a movie, than it is to let them in the voting booth. Lynn Jones loves elections!  And why not. He's been involved in the electoral ...

Months of undercover work led Calcasieu's Combined Anti-Drug Team (CAT) to perform a drug raid on two homes in Lake Charles back in late October. Six were arrested and booked, but one of those suspects was able to get back on the streets that same day, leaving many upset, including city council member Luvertha August.
