A 49-year-old Hornbeck man has been accused of running over another man following an altercation Friday night, authorities said.

Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft said Tully D. Thornton was arrested Saturday on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

"We were contacted early Saturday morning regarding a possible hit-and-run incident," Craft said Monday in a news release. "The caller advised that a man had been located in the Hornbeck area, and they believed that the man had been run over sometime (Friday) night."

Craft said the victim has been identified as 46-year-old Richard Burke, of Anacoco.

Burke sustained serious injuries but is in stable condition at an Alexandria-area hospital.

Burke said Thornton gave him a ride earlier in the day and that the two got into a physical altercation after consuming alcohol.

"Burke indicated that he left the vehicle and upon walking away, witnessed Thornton's minivan speed toward him, at which time the vehicle struck him," Craft said. "Burke said Thornton then put the vehicle into reverse and struck him a second time."

During their investigation, the Sheriff's Office received a telephone call indicating that Thornton was at a residence in Anacoco.

"Deputies arrived, and the residents advised that Thornton had driven his minivan into their air conditioning unit before traveling a short distance away and crashing into a utility pole," Craft said.

Thornton, who is being held on a $125,500 bond, was also charged with hit-and-run driving and simple criminal damage to property.
