GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A lighting-caused wildfire burning on the Grand Canyon's north rim is considered contained and no longer a threat to park resources.

A Galahad Fire began last Friday on the Walla Valley Peninsula, west of the main park road, and grew to 2,172 acres with no containment by Monday night, National Park Service fire managers said.

Grand Canyon National Parks officials said Friday that the nearly 5-square-mile fire is not out but that fire managers are confident it'll stay west of a road on the Walla Valley Peninsula.

The fire is officially only 30 percent contained but park officials said the rest of the fire is naturally contained by the canyon rim and previously burned areas with little fuel left to burn.

The area has burned within the last 15 years, according to the National Park Service.

Officials said what fire activity is left continues to improve forest health and wildlife habitat.

The fire that was burning in Ponderosa pine forest was about a quarter mile from a historic cabin and lookout tower on the peninsula.

About 60 Hotshots, six engine crews and other personnel were working to contain the spot fires across the W-4 Road and south of the Kanbowbitz Cabin.

The cabin was wrapped in a material used in the portable fire shelters carried and used by fire crews, and both structures were considered protected despite the nearness of the fire, said Jay Lusher, a fire management officer for Grand Canyon National Park.

Some crews and engines will continue to monitor the fire while others are being released so they're available for other fires as needed
