LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Mike Smith is leaving McNeese State to take over as head softball coach at Ole Miss, sources tell KPLC 7 Sports.

An official release and introduction isn't expected until next week.

The Cowgirls went 112-51 in three seasons under Smith, won two Southland Conference regular-season titles and posted three 30-win seasons.

McNeese went 40-17 this season but was left out of the NCAA tournament.

Smith is 748-224 in 17 seasons as a head coach. He has also spent time at California Baptist University, UC Riverside and Biola.

Ole Miss announced that Windy Thees was relieved of her duties as head coach on May 8. Thees coached the Lady Rebels for three seasons and went 69-94, 13-63 in SEC play.

Ole Miss has had success hiring away McNeese coaches. The Rebels named Mike Bianco their head baseball coach in 2000. Bianco, who spent three seasons as head coach at McNeese, has led the Rebels to 11 postseason appearances.
