HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WVUE) -

A 9-year-old New Orleans boy died Monday afternoon after being injured in a boating accident on the Wolf River shortly after 4 p.m.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove identified the child as Joseph Schmidt. He died as the result of blunt force trauma to the head and neck.

According to Melissa Scallan with the Department of Marine Resources, the boy and his sibling were on a tube being pulled by a boat. When the boat went around a bend, the tube hit a tree. Witnesses said they saw the boy go under the water, but officials couldn't confirm whether or not the child was wearing a life jacket.

The injured boy was rushed to Garden Park Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m.

The accident is under investigation by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the Harrison County Coroner's Office.
