Elderly LC woman dies from injuries sustained in house fire

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

An elderly Lake Charles woman has died from injuries sustained in a house fire.

The fire happened in the 600 block of 8th Street around 4:30 a.m. Friday. We're told a neighbor heard screams coming from the residence and pulled 85-year-old Alice Morton from the house before fire fighters arrived.

Morton was brought to Memorial Hospital, then airlifted to a burn center in Galveston, where family members said she died Saturday morning.

Morton's family said she lived in the house alone. They said Morton was also very active with the American Legion.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Afternoon Storms continue todayAfternoon Storms continue today

For the rest of the day, there will be more storms and showers that pop up in the afternoon. This is the new normal with the heat during the afternoon, and the extra moisture in the air. Not everyone will see rain, but if you are caught under one of these showers, you will likely see some heavy rainfall at times. Temperatures will still be hot today, especially where there is no rain. Highs will be in the lower 90s. Tonight, the rain should come to an end.
