WASHINGTON (CNN) - Hundreds of veterans are spending some of their Memorial Day weekend in Washington.

They have gathered Saturday at the World War II Memorial, laying wreaths.

They came ahead of the 10th anniversary of the memorial's dedication, which happened on May 29, 2004.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel speaks at the event, along with former Senator Bob Dole.

"That's why this memorial is so important. Like all memorials it was built to honor the sacrifices of those who have gone before us. But also, to instruct future generations that war is not an abstraction. War is real, with real consequences," Hagel said.
