LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Sulphur businessman Joseph R. Palermo Jr. was arrested Friday on a charge of intimidation of a witness, state police said.

He was arrested at 2:20 p.m. Friday, and state police did not say where he was arrested. He was released after posting a $25,000 bond.

The charge comes on the heels other legal trouble for 70-year-old Palermo.

A five-count indictment was unsealed against Palermo in April. The indictment included charges of forgery, three counts of possession of stolen things and altering or removing identifying numbers of a motor vehicle.

Calcasieu Parish District Attorney John DeRosier said the charges stem from an investigation by state police.

"This indictment alleges that the defendant was, in fact, in possession for a long period of time, of numerous items of stolen heavy equipment and utilized that equipment and did some activity to try and cover up the fact that this equipment was stolen," DeRosier said.

Palermo was released after posting a $75,000 bond.

On May 9, Palermo pleaded not guilty to the charges.
