VERNON PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

A 57-year-old man from Spring, Texas, was killed Thursday in a single-vehicle crash on La. 8 in Vernon Parish, state police said.

Trooper Scott Moreau, spokesman for Troop E, said Kenneth H. Carruth was killed when his vehicle left the roadway and struck two trees and a sign.

Moreau said Carruth was not wearing a seat belt.

"State police would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash," Moreau said in a news release.

Moreau said Troop E has investigated 21 fatal crashes that resulted in 24 fatalities this year.
