Council discusses Lakefront Downtown Action Plan 2014

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

What to do next in terms of improvements to downtown and lakefront development? That was up for discussion Wednesday night at the Lake Charles City Council meeting.

The Council discussed the Lakefront Downtown Action Plan of Work for 2014 as recommended by the Downtown Development Authority. However, not all the items were given the go ahead.

The Action Plan included three items: 1. Ryan Street Streetscape Phase II: Clarence Street Intersection; 2. Bord du Lac Park/Amphitheater improvements; and 3. Civic Center Festival Plaza and Bord du Lac Drive.

Council members were hesitant to vote on all three items because the said the only project that has complete funding is the Streetscape Phase II. However, Mayor Randy Roach explained it's just a step forward not a green light for the projects to begin.

"It's part of an action plan because people keep asking what are you going to do next, where are you going and that kind of thing. And so that is the purpose of the action plan to simply say this is where we are headed. We are not asking you to authorize us to go there right now, but this is a general direction that we intend to pursue and we intend to look at the next budget for context of these projects," said Mayor Roach.

After a lot of discussion, the council finally decided to authorize the city to enter into architectural and engineering agreements for the Streetscape Phase II.

The other two items will be reconsidered at a later date.
