CRAZY VIDEO

Driver manages to pull semi from brink of disaster in high winds

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

It is the video that has the trucking community talking.

A truck driver from Alabama manages to prevent his big rig from overturning during high winds recently on a highway just south of Hays.

The man was driving for KCK-based Butler Transport.

Truckers who have watched the video say the man's skill, the western Kansas sand grabbing the rig's tires and perhaps pure luck helped save the day. A motorist traveling behind the rig captured the heart-pounding video.

A local truck driving instructor said this is not something you really can teach.

Jeff Steinberg, owner and instructor at APEX CDL Institute, said the driver of the semi did an outstanding job in keeping the rig from rolling over.

"That driver deserves a medal," Steinberg said. "That was a great driving maneuver there."

At APEX drivers are taught how to avoid driving in situations like this, but sometimes Mother Nature has a mind of her own.

"He did the only thing you could do, which was a perfect reaction to turn in the wind," Steinberg said. "There's no way to actually teach that."

Semis especially when empty can tip over quite quickly, Steinberg said.

"Truck rollovers are the number one cause of fatalities for commercial drivers and it's usually caused from ejection of the vehicle," he said.

KCTV5 attempted to reach the driver but was unsuccessful.
