SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport police have identified the little boy who died after he was struck by a Caddo Parish school bus on Thursday afternoon.

Police say it was 6-year-old Brenden Houston that was critically injured just after getting off of bus #278 in Shreveport's North Highland's neighborhood just before 4 p.m. The boy was rushed to University Health Shreveport, where he died.

SPD Cpl. Marcus Hines says that preliminary information and evidence recovered at the scene suggests that Houston was struck by the school bus driven by 59-year-old Debra Kay Stevens of Hosston as she made a turn onto Winter Garden Drive from Addison Avenue.

According to Hines, it is believed Houston got off the bus along with a group of other children, but may have veered out Stevens' sight. Stevens may have thought the child was clear of the bus before she began to drive away.

Investigators are in the process of reviewing video surveillance from the bus to help piece together exactly what happened.

In accordance with state laws, Stevens was taken to a local hospital for standard toxicological screening. While Hines says impairment is not suspected in the crash, the investigation remains underway.

"It's too early in the investigation to determine fault," says Hines. Investigators are also reconstructing the scene of the accident.

There was reportedly 1 child left on the bus when the child was hit. All others had already gotten off.

Brenden Houston was a student at Herndon Magnet.

Caddo Parish School Board spokesman Victor Mainiero released a statement on Friday morning:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Brenden Houston, who was a 1st grader at Herndon Magnet School.  The school will have additional counselors and staff in the morning and as long as is needed to take care of students and staff during this traumatic time."
