SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) -

Slidell Police arrested a man for leaving two sets of children behind in vehicles while fleeing from police. Steven Charles, 35, was arrested Friday evening by Slidell Police.

According to police, Charles was involved in a hit and run accident near the intersection of Gause Boulevard and Carroll Road. Following the accident, Charles fled on foot, leaving the wrecked vehicle behind.

When police responded to the scene, officers found two small children, under the age of five, in the back seat. The children were unharmed and returned to their mother. Police issued warrants for Charles for hit and run and child abandonment.

On Friday, a Slidell Police officer spotted Charles driving a different vehicle on Highway 11. The officer attempted to stop Charles, but he began to run.

Police chased Charles through Lakewood Subdivision where he drove to a dead end road before jumping into a nearby pond. Police deployed a K-9 which helped in the apprehension of Charles. As police approached the vehicle, they found a different set of kids in the back seat. The two-year-old and four-year-old, who were not hurt, were again returned to their mother.

Charles was transported to the St. Tammany Parish Jail where he is facing several charges including aggravated flight from an officer and multiple counts of child abandonment.
