Tigers fall to Mississippi State 12-1 in series finale
From the Auburn University Athletics Department:
AUBURN, Ala. – An eight-run seventh inning put the game out of reach as Mississippi State finished off a three-game sweep of Auburn with a 12-1 win Sunday at Plainsman Park.
Auburn (25-23, 9-15 SEC) was swept for the second time in conference play this year and saw snapped a four-series home win streak over Mississippi State (31-18, 14-10), dating back to 2006.
A solo home run by freshman Daniel Robert provided Auburn's only offense of the weekend as he led off the bottom of the seventh with his first homer of the season to right field. His blast snapped a 29-inning scoreless streak for Auburn, dating back to the fifth inning of last Saturday's game at Arkansas.
Michael O'Neal (3-5) was charged with the loss as he lasted 3.2 innings while giving up three earned runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out one.
The Tiger bullpen allowed the floodgates to open in the seventh inning. Three different relievers combined to allow eight Bulldog runs as MSU raced to an 11-0 lead, sending 12 men to the plate in a nine-hit inning. Senior Reid Carter was solid over the final two frames, allowing one run on three hits.
Robert had two of Auburn's four hits on the day. Sam Gillikin and Jackson Burgreen had the other two.
Preston Brown (4-1) got the win for MSU with five shutout innings, allowing two hits. Brett Pirtle, Gavin Collins, Reid Humphreys and Matthew Britton had three hits each. Britton led the way with a 3-for-5 day and four RBI, including a bases-clearing double in the eighth.
Auburn steps out of SEC play Tuesday night with a home game against Bethune-Cookman at 6 p.m.
