SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) -

A 24-year-old Sulphur man died Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash in St. Martin Parish, state police said.

Trooper Stephen Hammons, spokesman for Troop I, said Charles Parker III died in a crash on La. 70 near Stephensville.

"At 6:30 a.m. this morning, Parker was driving south on La. 70," Hammons said in a news release. "For reasons still under investigation, Parker crossed the centerline and struck an 18-wheeler."

The driver of the 18-wheeler, Michael Smith of Morgan City, was not seriously injured.

Hammons said Parker was unrestrained and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We are also investigating the possibility that Parker was distracted by his cell phone prior to the crash," Hammons said.
