CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

Calcasieu Parish residents on Saturday approved two tax renewals for public schools.

The first proposition, a 10-year, .05 percent sales tax, passed 75 percent to 25 percent. The tax, used to supplement the salaries of teachers and other employees of the school system, could generate $22.5 million per year.

The second proposition, a 10-year, 3.5 maintenance millage, passed 74 percent to 26 percent. The tax, which is used for maintenance and operation of public schools, could generate about $5.9 million per year.

All results are unofficial until verified by the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office.
