JEFF DAVIS PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

Jeff Davis residents on Saturday approved a sales tax to fund the operation and maintenance of the new parish jail.

With 20 of the 23 precincts reporting, the proposition was ahead 2,489 yes votes to 1,002.

The parish already has money from the state to buy the land and build the facility. Earlier this week, parish officials said the new jail will be built on an undeveloped tract off of US 90 in Jennings.

Officials said the 10-year, .05 percent sales tax will raise about $2.1 million per year.

All results are unofficial until verified by the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office.
