Arrest warrants issued for accused ticket scam artist exposed by I-Team

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Just hours before the Channel 4 I-Team aired video of an accused scam artist walking away from our cameras after we asked her if she was selling bogus concert tickets, Metro police issued six criminal warrants for her arrest.

The same woman told the Channel 4 I-Team anyone who buys tickets on Craigslist does so at their own risk.

The six criminal warrants were issued for Angela Formica on three counts of felony criminal simulation and three counts of misdemeanor theft.

Four of her former customers came to the Channel 4 I-Team with complaints, and we decided to turn the tables on Formica.

Sam and Diane Wadsworth of Mt. Juliet, and Maggie Combs and Braydon Strous of Nashville, bought more than $500 worth of tickets from Formica through Craigslist.

The couples say they met Formica outside the Ryman Auditorium, paid cash and got excited to see the only Nashville concert on the George Strait farewell tour.

But when they showed up at Bridgestone Arena, they were told their tickets were no good.

"I said, 'What do we do?' And she [the ticket agent] said, 'I guess go home,'" said Diane Wadsworth.

"I cried. I cried," said Combs.

The couples realized they had been sold copies of actual tickets that looked authentic.

They went from sad to angry and called the Channel 4 I-Team.

"Probably we're not going to get our money back. But if we could just get this little girl off the streets so she doesn't do this to somebody else," said Sam Wadsworth.

So Combs worked with the Channel 4 I-Team to go once more onto Craigslist and arrange a sale with Formica to buy tickets to the upcoming One Direction concert.

All Formica knew is that she was meeting a man in a suit named Jeremy.

She introduced herself as Angela, and with our hidden cameras rolling, told chief investigative reporter Jeremy Finley that she could sell the tickets for $530.

Formica said all we would have to do was show up at the concert, our tickets would be scanned and we could go right in.

Knowing that the couples had been sold copies of tickets, Finley noted the tickets Formica was trying to sell him were also copies.

"These don't look like actual tickets. They look like copies," Finley said.

"They are actual tickets. Yeah, these are tickets," Formica said.

At that point, Finley identified himself.

"I'm Jeremy, Jeremy Finley with Channel 4's investigative unit, and we've been approached by a number of people that say you've been selling them bogus tickets," Finley said.

Formica cursed and said "Yeah."

"I need to ask you about that," Finley said.

"OK, well, I gotta go," Formica said.

As she walked away from our cameras, Formica said the tickets she was selling to Finley were not bogus.

"What about the other tickets the other people say you sold them that were bogus?," Finley asked.

"I mean, I don't know what to say to this," Formica said.

"When they showed up at the concert, they couldn't get in," Finley said.

"It's at your own risk," Formica said.

"At your own risk?" Finley asked.

"I'm sorry," Formica said.

The Channel 4 I-Team showed the video of our interview to the couples, including how Formica said that whoever bought tickets on Craigslist did so at their own risk.

"She didn't deny it at all," Combs said.

"I would like to go up to her and say, 'How do you sleep at night?' or 'Does your momma know what you're doing?'" Diane Wadsworth said.

Formica didn't stick around to let us verify if her tickets were good, and she covered up her face with the tickets and headed back downtown.

"Right now, you just got caught by the news. And there's going to be a time when you're going to be caught by law enforcement, and there's going to be a bigger price to pay. You might get caught by Jeremy. You might be caught by police," Combs said.

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron confirmed that some of Formica's former customers took part in a police lineup Thursday and identified Formica.

Metro police said to avoid this happening to you, try to only buy tickets from Ticketmaster, a box office or an official ticket website.

Police said if you do buy tickets on Craigslist, they suggest having the ticket seller go with you to the venue to make sure it's valid before the concert.

At the very least, insist that you see a photo identification of the person selling the tickets to see that their names match the name on the ticket.
