TUPELO, MS -

(WMC) - Residents are cleaning up after a tornado blew through Tupelo, Miss. leaving damaged homes and businesses. Some are without homes or recovering from injuries.

"It hurts to look, because I won't come home tonight," said resident Britney Butler, who lost her house but managed to smile in the midst of a mess. "Oreo [my dog] means the most to me."

The dog made it out unscathed from the wreckage on Clayton Avenue; neighbors say Butler's grandparents weren't as fortunate.

"As her grandmother was coming back down the hallway, the air conditioner came through the wall of the hall and pinned her grandmother to the wall," said neighbor Angela Howard.

Howard said the grandmother will be OK and so will the grandfather who received some scrapes and abrasions

Multiple other people were also injured. The Lee County coroner confirms one person died after the tornado, which received a preliminary rating of EF2 from the National Weather Service survey team. The victim's vehicle reportedly hydroplaned or was blown off of Palmetto Road in Verona, south of Tupelo.

At 2:43 p.m., trained weather spotters reported a tornado near the city. This tornado was located near Bissell, moving northeast at 50 MPH. A tornado emergency was also in effect for northwestern Itawamba and southeastern Pontotoc Counties.

Several tractor-trailers were reportedly blown off of the road at the busy intersection of US 78 and US 45.

"Right as it ripped the roof off the building over there we all jumped in the pit," said Havoline Express Lube Manager Anthony Bishop.

Bishop says he and his co-workers immediately took cover and started praying.

"Heard blocks hitting cars above me glass flying all around the pit where we were," he said.

When the storm stopped the men couldn't believe the damage. Roof tops and buildings were ripped off—some wiped away completely.

The NBC affiliate in North Mississippi had to take cover during their broadcast. A YouTube video shows WTVA crews evacuating the studio after talking about a damaging tornado on the ground: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTWQUy76paA.

They have since returned from taking shelter and were able to work using an emergency generator.

A citywide 9 p.m. curfew was implemented for the entire city of Tupelo on Monday night. When the sun rises Tuesday, people will be back here cleaning up.
