SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

With the spring comes threats of severe weather, including tornadoes. While most tornadoes happen between 3 and 9 p.m., they can come at any time of day or night.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 5 a.m. for two thirds of the ArkLaTex.

Here's some safety tips you may want to follow if find yourself in the path of a tornado:

If you're inside a building:

Go to a safe room, like a basement, cellar or the lowest building level.

If you don't have a basement, go to an inside room. KSLA News 12's StormTracker Steve says the safest place to be during a twister is an area where you can get the most walls between you and the outside of the building.

Cover your head if you can. Mattresses are good for this. Even a football, bicycle or construction helmet can provide a little added protection. Most of the 321 deaths in the April 25-28, 2011 tornado outbreak that hit Alabama and Mississippi hardest were from head injuries, StormTracker Steve says.

Stay away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls. Do not open your windows.

If you're in a trailer or mobile home, FEMA suggests getting out immediately and heading to the lowest floor of a sturdy building close by or to a storm shelter.

If you're outside with no shelter nearby, FEMA says to get into a vehicle, buckle your seatbelt, and put your head down below the windows. Cover your head with your hands and a blanket, coat or cushion. However, StormTracker Steve says you're safer lying in a ditch or low area, and not under a bridge or overpass.

After the storm, FEMA suggests the following:

Wear sturdy shoes or boots as glass or nails could be on the ground.

Don't go near dangling or loose power lines.

Text, don't talk, unless there's a life-threatening situation. This is just to keep the phone lines open for emergency workers.

Gage Meche is doing really well in his recovery, according to his family. This week KPLC met up with the 7 year old to deliver some special gifts our viewers have sent in. From handwritten "get well" cards, to coloring books, to a Captain America fidget spinner - Gage loved all the gifts.  It's now been two months since he was accidentally shot at Moss Bluff Elementary, but from the smile on his face you'd probably never know.  A benefit is planned for Gage...
