Local runner inspired to run Boston Marathon

MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

Little more than a year ago, tragedy struck at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, but the terrorists who set off the bombs that day did little to dampen the spirits of runners.

In fact, Boston's resilience has inspired a local man to hit the pavement at this year's race for the first time.

Rich Wells, 53, caught the running bug several years ago and this year he's running down a dream.

"I've always had a goal. It's on my bucket list, to run the Boston Marathon," Wells said.

Wells is one of a handful of runners from Midland who can proudly sport this year's Boston Marathon jacket.

He qualified for this year's race after finishing strong at last year's Great Lakes Bay Marathon, making him part of the elite group to run the Boston Marathon since last year's bombings.

"After the bombings happened and I saw the reaction of not just the city of Boston, but the whole country, I wanted to be there. I wanted to be a part of it," Wells said.

Wells passed his love of running to his 16-year-old son Andrew.

"I think it'd be amazing to run the Boston some day, that'd be amazing," Andrew said.

Andrew says he's proud of his dad and he's not worried about any horrific events happening this year.

"He's been super committed and only eating spaghetti this week cause he says he needs the carbs. It's inspiring seeing how determined he is," Andrew said.

"You can knock us down, but we don't stay down. We get back up and we're gonna do it even better, and I want to be part of that," Wells said.
