Home runs crush NSU against TAMU-CC

NATCHITOCHES, LA (NSU Sports Information) -

Two home runs and four runs batted in from Brandon Tierney led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the plate in a 5-3 win over the Northwestern State baseball team Friday night in Southland Conference play at Brown-Stroud Field to drop the Demons into a three-way tie for fourth place.

NSU (22-16, 10-7) is tied with Sam Houston State and McNeese State, and is one game behind the Islanders (21-19, 11-6), Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls.  The series finale will be played at 2 o'clock on Sunday.  It was the first series that the Demons have dropped in six played.

"Championships are won in the third game, and we have to find a way to not get swept," said Demon head coach Lane Burroughs. "Corpus has got a good club.  They are in first place, and we have a good league.

"It is one series, and we're certainly not going to pack it in," he said. "We have a lot ahead of us, and our guys won't have any trouble getting ready for tomorrow and the rest of the year."

Tierney sent both of his homers over the left field wall, and both were two-run blasts.  The first was in the fifth inning, and it scored Russell from third base on a full count. Vaughn reached on a double to right center field and then took third base on a sacrifice bunt from Josh Garza.

His second was in the eighth inning and scored Jordan Lee, who singled through the left side to lead off the inning.  One more run came across in that frame on a sacrifice fly to left field from Zack Gibson to score Tyler Ware.

The Demons made a late surge in the eighth inning, down 5-1.  Webster sent a one-out single up the middle, and took second base after Joel Atkinson took a five-pitch walk.  Edwin Gomez doubled to left field to score Webster, and Atkinson scored on a wild pitch.

With Gomez on third base, Caleb Dugas took a walk, but was gunned down on an attempt to take second base with the Demons leader in RBI, Chase Daughdrill, at the plate to end the inning.

"I thought our guys did a good job battling back, but we made a lot of mistakes," said Burroughs.

Regan Kaufman hit a two-out double to left field in the bottom of the ninth. He took third base on a wild pitch, but did not score after Jacob Dorris struck out the final batter.

NSU's first run was in the sixth inning. Atkinson scored on a two-out single through the left side from Dugas.

Trevor Belicek (2-5) started on the mound for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and had a perfect game after five innings. He finished with 7.1 innings pitched and allowed three runs on three hits and three walks.

"Belicek was good.  I thought he kept us off-balance and his stuff was really good. I tip my hat to him," said Burroughs. "It was as good a performance as someone has put on us."

Jacob Dorris earned his third save of the year on one inning pitched with one hit allowed.

Josh Oller (2-1) was tagged with the loss after he allowed two runs on six hits and two walks.  Hunter Duvic relieved him and gave up three runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.

Evan Tidwell finished out the game with 1.2 innings of work, and allowed one hit and two walks.

NSU collected four hits in the game, and Gomez, Dugas, Kaufman and Webster had those. The Demons also drew four walks.  The Islanders had nine hits, and were led by Tierney who had three.

Three teams lead the league with 11-6 records, and three teams follow it 10-7 records.  Lamar, Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas are all 9-8.

NSU will travel to face Arkansas on Tuesday and Wednesday before they host Central Arkansas in a three-game set that starts on Friday.
