Local group takes part in Walk for Christ

Posted: Updated:

Parishioners from the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sweet Lake hit the road Friday for the eighth annual Walk for Christ.

"We are here to walk with Jesus," said Father Emanuel Tanu. "We just want to taste a piece of the cross because Jesus died for us and today, we want to show our faith and we want to walk with him today."

Members of all ages gathered at the St. Patrick's Catholic Chapel at 7 a.m. and began their 14.6 mile journey to St. John Vianney's Catholic Church in Bell City for the 3 p.m. service.

Member Matthew Boudoin helped lead the group by keeping track of time and making 14 stops along the way in honor of the "14 Stations of the Cross", said to be known in the Catholic community. Boudoin says the walk's turnout was proof of commitment from the church.

"Adults, children, I mean, some people can hardly walk, but at least they try," said Boudoin. "Being that it's Good Friday, it gives us a chance to meditate on the suffering of the passion that is our Lord Jesus Christ."

With crosses, water bottles in hand and Christ in their hearts, members agreed the walk is all worth it.

Members arrived in Bell City at exactly 2 p.m. and they say walking in Christ's honor is what makes the walk memorable ever year.

The walk was inspired by other "Walk For Christ" in the area including one that starts in Westlake and moves to DeQuincy and another starting in Sulphur to Carlyss.
