A'ja Wilson still getting use to newfound celebrity

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

It's been a full day since Heathwood Hall senior A'ja Wilson made it official and said she's staying in Columbia and will play basketball with the University of South Carolina.

A'ja already has a lot of name recognition in the Midlands and around the Palmetto State but now that she's heading to USC, she'll be in the national spotlight too.

"I actually forget that I am a Gamecock because I'm so used to saying ‘I don't know, we'll see Wednesday,' but Wednesday's passed but it has been great," Wilson said. "We really couldn't have done it without the Heathwood community."

Despite the recognition, Wilson said she still feels the same.

"I don't think about it," Wilson said. "I just take everything in stride."

There's no doubt that even before taking the court for the Gamecocks. Wilson has already become a celebrity in the sports world.

"I have two young sons, and they talk about her all the time like the second and third graders, they're all about A'ja that's for sure. Hopefully we got another A'Ja down in the 1st grade we don't know about as of now," said A'ja's basketball coach John O'Cain.

The top recruit of the class, Wilson capped her high school career by leading Heathwood to the independent schools Class AAA state title.

The 6-foot-5 post player averaged 34.4 points, 13.9 rebounds and 5.0 blocks en route to a treasure trove of accolades including Naismith National High School Player of the Year and WBCA Player of the Year and Parade Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

She was named to the USA Today's All-USA Girls Basketball Team and posted 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the McDonald's All-America game in Chicago earlier this month.
