Metro schools ask for 4.4% budget increase

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro schools leaders made their pitch for more money to Nashville Mayor Karl Dean on Wednesday.

The Metro School Board is asking for an additional $32.5 million for the upcoming school year.

The proposed $779 million budget is a 4.4 percent increase over the current year budget.

For schools director Dr. Jesse Register, the big push in the new budget is Pre-K education, but Dean said they may have to get creative when it comes to funding.

"We think that's very important, a quality Pre-K program," said Register.

"It's going to be a tight budget," said Dean.

In addition to the Pre-K expansion, Register is pushing for a 2 percent cost-of-living raise for teachers and staff. They're also putting a priority on the technology plan and the K-12 literacy project.

The Mayor's office will present its final budget proposal to the Metro Council at the end of April.
