LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The City of Laurens' eyecatching but controversial anti-littering signs have been removed by state road crews. But Laurens' mayor said she will continue the "bold" campaign, saying it is working.

A spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Transportation said they removed at least one of the city's new signs that went up at the end of March.

Three different signs were posted as part of the city's 2014 Don't Trash Laurens campaign, but one design is no longer standing.

SCDOT said the sign that read, "Don't litter, Jack***, that means you!" was deemed inappropriate and taken down. The other two designs will remain up as long as the city gets them approved through the DOT-permitting process, which the spokesperson said was underway.

"I think the trash on our streets is a whole lot more offensive," said Mayor Sharon Brownlee, saying the "Jack***" signs will now be placed in areas under city jurisdiction.

Councilmember Sylvia Douglas, however, said she wants the signs completely removed.

"I perceive it as a bullying technique," she said.

"Do we really want to get our point across in such a negative way?" said Heather Sipes, who works in Laurens and said the sign is offensive to little eyes.

The signs were created by residents as part of a contest the city held. The winners took home gift certificates.
