(RNN) – Longtime director, actor and producer Richard Attenborough has passed away. He was 90 years old.

Attenborough's son reported to the BBC that his father died around lunchtime on Sunday.

Attenborough was best known for directing Gandhi and his roles in the movies Jurassic Park and Miracle on 34th Street.

British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted about the actor on Sunday, saying, "His acting in 'Brighton Rock' was brilliant, his directing of 'Gandhi' was stunning - Richard Attenborough was one of the greatest of cinema."

Attenborough had a long and storied film career dating back to 1942, when he appeared as a deserting sailor in the film In Which We Serve.

The oldest of three brothers, including famous broadcaster and narrator David, Attenborough was born on Aug. 29, 1923 in Cambridge, England.

His early film career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, but not for long. He served in the war in the Royal Air Force and appeared in a propaganda film, then flew with the Film Unit of the RAF to record the outcomes of bomber missions.

Attenborough ended up appearing in several war-related films upon his return at the end of the war, and it wasn't until his role as Pinkie Brown in Brighton Rock, a film adaptation of a novel by the same name, that he got his big break.

Throughout his career, he won several awards including two Academy Awards – one each for best picture and director for Gandhi in 1982. He also won three Golden Globes and four BAFTA Awards.

Attenborough's last work, in which he was both director and producer, was Closing the Ring which was released in 2007. The film went back to his earlier roots and portrayed a young man searching for the owner of a ring that belonged to a crashed U.S. WWII bomber in 1944.

In 1945, Attenborough married English actress Sheila Sim, who was still with him at the time of his death. The two had three children together: Jane, Michael and Charlotte.

Jane Holland, her daughter and her mother-in-law were all killed in the Indonesian tsunami in 2004. Two of Holland's children and Attenborough's grandchildren, Samuel and Alice, survived.

In recent years, Attenborough was moved to a care home along with his wife in 2013 after suffering a stroke in 2008 that confined him to a wheelchair, according to the Telegraph. His family said he never fully recovered after the incident.
