LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

Authorities said a south Lake Charles man killed his wife and set fire to their home before taking his own life Monday.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office said Charles L. Russell, 65, died at a local hospital from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The body of Sandra G. Russell, 69, was found inside the home at the corner of Elliott Road and Dolphin Drive.

The cause of death for Sandra Russell has not been determined as firefighters were forced leave the burning home after a hand grenade was found.

A state police bomb squad was called in to handle the explosive.

Fire fighters responded to the blaze around 11:30 a.m. and found Charles Russell in the doorway of the home. He was transported to a local hospital and died around 2:20 p.m.
