SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) -

Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a report of a single vehicle crash on U. S. Highway 90 about 3 miles west of Sulphur in Calcasieu Parish that seriously injured a woman from Sulphur. It happened around 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by 42-year-old Laura K. Stark-Smith of Sulphur was traveling east on U.S. 90 when, for unknown reasons, her vehicle veered across the centerline and opposing lane into a driveway.  Upon impact, the vehicle vaulted end over end causing Stark-Smith to be partially ejected from the vehicle.

Stark-Smith, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was initially transported to a nearby hospital by Acadian Air Med with life-threatening injuries and has since been transported to a hospital in Shreveport in critical condition.

A toxicology sample was obtained from Stark-Smith and will be submitted for analysis.  The crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in every seating position, day and night.  Wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed as the result of a crash and is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves.

Motorists are encouraged to always make the smart choice and to wear their seatbelt.  This crash serves as yet another tragic reminder of how important this decision can be.
