OAKDALE, LA (KPLC) -

Authorities have identified the victim and the suspect in a fatal stabbing that took place Monday night in Oakdale.

Police Chief Scotty Laborde said Ralph E. Johnson, 61, stabbed 21-year-old Michael J. Kirkland during a brief altercation around 6:20 p.m.

"We responded to Harvey Street in the Bowman Hicks area after an anonymous caller said there was a man with a knife threatening to kill people," Laborde told KPLC Wednesday. "It appears Johnson attacked Kirkland's grandmother and Kirkland tried to defend her."

Johnson has been arrested on charges of second-degree murder, obstruction of justice and aggravated battery.
