Highways 49 and 13 closed due to flooding - KPLC 7 News, Lake Charles, Louisiana

Highways 49 and 13 still closed, no word on when they will reopen

SIMPSON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

If you travel Highway 49 in the Mendenhall area, you will need to find an alternate route.  The highway is once again closed in both directions at Strong River.

Additionally, Highway 13 three miles north of Mendenhall is closed due to flooding.

Northbound alternative routes include: Highway 18 to Highway 541 back to Highway 49 and Highway 469 to Highway 28 to Highway 49. Southbound alternatives: Highway 49 to Highway 541 to Highway 18 and Highway 49 to Highway 18 to Highway 541.

The southbound lanes of Hwy 49 reopened Monday night, north of Mendenhall. But a news release early Tuesday morning shows it closed again.  Water has been over the roadway at Dabbs Creek, stopping traffic in all directions.

No word on when the highways will reopen.

The National Weather Service of Jackson issued a flood warning on Tuesday morning for the Strong River at D'Lo in Simpson County.

The NWS says the flood warning has been extended until late Thursday night. The river is currently at 34 feet and rising.

According to the NWS, water could flood homes in D'Lo and Mendenhall and could begin to flow over new Highway 49 bridge near D'Lo.

We'll update this story and alert when ever we get new information.

A group of boys are taking their love for baseball off the field and into the backyard. And no, this isn't a scene out of the 1993 classic "The Sandlot." It’s happening right here in Lake Charles.

At the David household, there's something special going on in the backyard.

“One day in the backyard we came out here and decided to start playing around,” said Dylan David, who started a Wiffle ball league with his friends.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST: Scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout this week

    Sunday, May 28 2017 5:25 PM EDT2017-05-28 21:25:05 GMT
Rain likely on Memorial DayRain likely on Memorial Day

Through tonight we will see mostly cloudy skies with scattered thunderstorms. At times we could see heavy rainfall. The rain will make its way out by sunrise on Memorial Day. The winds are still blowing out of the south and will continue to blow 5-10 mph overnight. This will keep our temperatures warm. Overnight, we will struggle to get out of the 70s once again. Unfortunately, the rain chances are still high for Memorial Day and through next week.
