Jackson Mayoral Profile: Margaret Barrett-Simon

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

For nearly 3 decades, Margaret Barrett-Simon has served Ward 7. She was first elected in 1985. Now, she wants to be mayor.

"I have served with 5 mayors, said Barrett-Simon. "I know what has worked and what has not worked. I have also served  in every capacity on the council from president to vice president of committees. There is nothing at the city level I have not done."

The veteran councilwoman acknowledges serious challenges in this city, but the same problems also plague other older cities.

"It's about bringing everybody to the table," added Barrett-Simon. "And we can achieve that. There is such a feeling in this town right now that has to happen."

Knowing the internal workings of the city, she says the planning is a critical link to the future.

"We have lost a number of very important people in recent weeks in our planning department," said Barrett-Simon. "And people don't understand planning and development affects every aspect of your life. It can make or break the community, it can make or break a neighborhood."

She says Ward 7 is the hub for economic development, citing numerous projects she helped bring to fruition, including Baptist Hospital expansion, mid-town neighborhood revitalization and others.

"Most of the economic development that's going on right now is happenings in this ward," said Barrett-Simon. "That means jobs, that means people moving into homes, that means working in Jackson. We also have a program in this development called jobs for Jacksonian which insures a percentage of the jobs in these projects go to our citizens."

Barrett-Simon says her campaign supporters are addressing last minute details as she faces a large field of candidates hoping to become Jackson's next mayor Tuesday.
