Southland Park Gaming and Racing kicks off Sunday races

(WMC-TV) - One casino is taking a gamble on a new plan to bring even more business to the Mid-South.

They go at speeds of at least 35 miles an hour and this Sunday, the Southland Greyhounds will be racing for the first time on a Sunday in the track's 58 year history.

"I think it will be good because the area could really use the money," said Troy Keeping, Southland Park's President and General Manager. "The reason we started Sunday racing is our business has grown so much that we've had a huge request from our racing guests and other guests to have racing on Sunday."

Southland Park Gaming and Racing is doing well with plenty of patrons at the casino, and the dogs bring in around 1,000 people a week. Southland spent two years convincing the Arkansas legislature to allow the Sunday racing and it was finally approved.

"It will put us out in the market place with everybody else and with our product I think, we will do well," added Director of Racing Operations Shane Bolender.

Southland already has the highest purses paid in the county bringing in big name racing Greyhounds like Rob Gronkowski; the dog not the New England Patriot.

Southland Park pumps in $100 million into the local economy every year, employing 650 people. There are plans for a $37 million expansion with a 41,000 square foot addition and 60 new jobs.

With Rob Gronkowski coming to town it looks like a good bet.

Southland will now be one of only 10 tracks in the country to feature live greyhound racing on Sundays. The live card begins at 2:00 p.m. this Sunday and will feature 18 races.
