Local athletes named to all-state basketball teams

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA (KPLC) -

Southwest Louisiana was well represented on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association all-state basketball teams that were released on Friday.

The Lake Area had multiple first- and second-team selections, and a few picked up the top awards in their class.

DeRidder's Tammie Gibson was named the Class 4A girls coach of the year. In Class C, Hackberry's Destiny Simon was named player of the year, while Jay Bergeron was honored as coach of the year.

Below are the Southwest Louisiana athletes who were honored. The full list, which is missing the Class B teams, can be seen HERE or http://bit.ly/1hdEd2s.

In Class 5A, Sulphur senior Becca Brooks was named to the first team, and Sam Houston's Sam Logan was an honorable mention.

In Class 4A, DeRidder's Tammie Gibson was named coach of the year, Washington-Marion sophomore Mark Vital was a first-team selection, and DeRidder's Breannah Bretches was placed on the second team. Leesville's Vidall Corbin and Briane Miller, of DeRidder, and Washington-Marion's Ashley Cherry were honorable mentions.

In Class 3A, St. Louis' Kelvin Henry and Sissy Saucier, of South Beauregard, were second-team selections. Honorable mentions included: Iowa's Taray Martin, South Beauregard's Micah McElhaney and Shanna Barrow, Jennings' Draylon Perkins, Westlake's Jacobe Escolovon, Iota's Jillian Bone and Frances Thompson, of St. Louis.

In Class 2A, Pickering's Sami Thomas and Lake Arthur's Elizabeth Guidry were named to the first team. Honorable mentions were Welsh's Brandius Batiste, Vinton's Antwan Budwine, Pickering's Ashley McKellar and Lake Arthur's Gabby Guidry.

In Class 1A, Merryville's Andrea Cournoyer was placed on the first team while Kenan Fontenot, of Hamilton Christian, was named to the second team. Oberlin's Kendric Cole, Merryville's Peyton Cournoyer and East Beauregard's Carlee Herrington were honorable mentions.

In Class C, Hackberry's Destiny Simon was named player of the year, and Jay Bergeron was named coach of the year. Elizabeth's Colby LaFauci and Erin Maddox, Plainview's Shy Thompson and Hackberry's Jolie Trahan was honored with first-team selections. Elizabeth's Colby Friday and Kelli Crager, of Plainview, were placed on the second team. Honorable mentions were: Johnson Bayou's Cameron Hare and Daria Jinks, Elizabeth's Collin McClellan and Sydney LaFauci, Reeves' Travis Schultz and Plainview's Zack James.
