JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Words can barely describe the roller coaster of fear and elation that Hinds County Deputy Gregory McNeil went through Friday morning, when his four-year-old granddaughter, McKenzie, was abducted briefly, then found safe.

"It's tough," he told us, choking back tears. "You have feelings where something happens in your immediate family, or in the department, of course, you're gonna be erratic, stuff like that."

The ordeal began on Wacaster Street.

"The child's aunt had dropped off her child. They left the four-year-old with the vehicle running," says Jackson Police Spokeswoman Colendula Green.

"When she came back out, the car and baby was gone. From that point on I texted my sheriff," Deputy McNeil adds. We had units out here serving papers. They got a call, description of the car. (The deputy in the area) started circling around, somebody pulled over, there was a baby in the car down the street, crying."

Other family members converged on the scene on Moss Avenue, catching their breath, comforting McKenzie, and thanking law enforcement for quick action.

"Thankful to God that it didn't go another way. Because it could have gone many different ways," says Maria McNeil, McKenzie's grandmother.

Police don't have a good description of the juvenile who took the car. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and cap.
