Deadline today to avoid health insurance penalty

Good Monday morning to you!  Britney Glaser here with a look at what's in store on today's Sunrise:

*The push is on to get Americans signed up for Obamacare before tonight's deadline.  With open enrollment now down to its final hours, sign-up centers around the country are experiencing a last minute surge of enrollments.

*A delegation from Southwest Louisiana plays a role in the decision to reopen Phelps Correctional Center in DeQuincy.  Find out what's next for this property and the impact it's expected to have on surrounding areas.

*Before construction begins on a new jail in Jeff Davis Parish, there's some work that needs to be done on maintenance and operation costs.  Find out about the proposed sales tax that is now up to voters and a meeting that will take place tonight for more information.

*We're opening the Sunrise Pet Shop this morning to introduce you to a furry friend in need of a home.  Don't miss that segment at 6:15.

    The State Bond Commission has awarded Calcasieu and Vernon parishes millions of dollars for public improvement projects, State Treasurer Ron Henson announced Friday. The commission approved $290.7 million for projects statewide during its August meeting, according to Henson's office.

    Melissa Gregory spends her sunny days outdoors feeding ducks near the Lake Charles Veterans Memorial Park. "It's perfect conditions," said Gregory about the sunny day because it helps her relax and get rid of stress, but lately with all the rain she's been feeling stressed. "I feel kind of cooped up and I feel like I can't go outside, and I have to hide under the roof or stay in the house or hide under the umbrella," she said.
