LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

David Dice Fontenot has been found guilty of second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Stephin Bergeron in 2011.

Fontenot, who will be sentenced April 23, was also found guilty of the attempted murder of Chance Bourgeois. The sentence for second-degree murder is life in prison without the benefit of parole.

Fontenot's trial began Monday with jury selections and opening statements were made Tuesday. On Wednesday, closing arguments began around 3:30 p.m., the jury started deliberating at 4:40 p.m. and a verdict was returned by 5:55 p.m.

The 20-year-old Bergeron died April 13, 2011, after being shot multiple times while walking with Bourgeois on La. 27 in Sulphur. Bourgeois was not injured in the shooting.

Initially, Devin Badon was also indicted on a murder charge. But Badon pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in 2012 and has already completed his sentence.

KPLC's Theresa Schmidt will have more on later editions.
