LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

A Lake Charles woman is in custody after a 2-year-old boy was found wandering barefoot and dirty in an apartment complex, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office Kim Myers said Darnetta Marie Coleman is facing a charge of child desertion.

"The (child) was barefoot, dirty and wearing a diaper that appeared to have not been changed for some time," Myers said. "The child appeared to be in poor health and also had a severe rash with several open sores."

Myers said Coleman, a family member of the child, was asleep when deputies arrived at her apartment.

"The apartment was extremely foul," Myers said. "(There was) was a sparse amount of food. Carpets, furniture and walls were stained and covered in dirt and with a strong odor of mildew and stagnant food."

The child was removed from the home by the Department of Children & Family Services.

Bond was set at $50,000.
