LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) -

From colorful flowers to one-of-a-kind accessories, the 15th Annual SWLA Garden Conference and Expo was in full bloom.

"Last year, I came with my son," said Delores Hensley. "Him and I are both into plants but he has a green thumb and I don't. So, I saw this purple plant and purple's my favorite color so I said, "I'm going to try this."

Visitors showed for their favorite plants and received complimentary gardening tips from experts, but it was one group in particular who combined their love for gardening as well as their love for helping those in need."

"We have individuals with developmental disabilities," said Community Relations and Vocational Services Coordinator at the Robinswood School in Lake Charles Julie Montague. "As a part of their vocational training, we have a green house and we order small plants and they come into the greenhouse and actually do all the work."

Their hard work was in full display for the first time and was made available for purchasing.

"My favorite part is seeing their faces and their smiles," said Montague. "They were just amazed.

The event, formerly known as the SWLA Garden Festival, featured gardening talks, advice from gardening experts and vendors selling plants and gardening tools and accessories. Local 4-H members also helped customers load purchases into vehicles.

The event was sponsored by the LSU AgCenter.
