Kaufman's six runs leads Demons past LSUA

Regan Kaufman's six runs batted in, most from a grand slam in the third inning, fueled an offensive outburst that led the Northwestern State baseball team in 16-9 win over LSU-Alexandria Wednesday in non-conference action.

He had every RBI in the third inning, which was the first of two four-RBI innings in the game for Northwestern State (10-9), on the grand slam to right center field. He knocked in two more in the sixth inning on single to left field.  LSUA dropped to 18-10 on the season.

"Kaufman does a great job with left-handed pitchers.  They were closing the gap on us and we need a big hit, and he drove the ball out of the yard," said Demon head coach Lane Burroughs. "It was a good night to hit at Brown-Stroud, and its not always like this. He took advantage of it."

Chase Daughdrill singled to center field to lead off the Demons' third inning.  Bret Underwood reached on an error by T.J. Trantham to follow Daughdrill, and Nathan Lyons walked to load the bases before Kaufman cleared them on a 1-0 count.  In the sixth inning, the Natchitoches native knocked Underwood and Daughdrill, who each reached on singles to right field, in the sixth inning.

The Demons opened the game with three runs in the each in the first and second innings to hold a 6-0 lead after two innings.

Northwestern State started the first inning with a single from Edwin Gomez who eventually reached third base after a single from Joel Atkinson and walk to Caleb Dugas.  Gomez scored on a single from Cort Brinson, Atkison scored on a double-play ball, and Underwood doubled to left field to knock in Dugas.

Gomez doubled down the left field line to score C.J Webster, who reached on a walk, in the second inning. Atkinson put up a sacrifice fly up to score Gomez after he stole third base., and Dugas homered to right field, the first from the Demons this season, push the score to 6-0.

LSUA rallied in the third inning with three runs, and Kaufman's grand slam in the next frame made the score 10-3.  The Generals added one more run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth before Kaufman's single made it 12-6 after six innings.

Brinson doubled to left center field to score Dugas and Atkinson before Daughdrill singled through the left side to score him.  Daughdrill scored on a triple to left center field by Underwood in the four-run seventh inning.

Six Demons (Gomez, Dugas, Brinson, Daughdrill, and Kaufman) had two or more hits in the game. Brinson contributed three runs batted in.  As a group, the Demons collected 16 hits, seven walks, and one hit-by-pitch.

"We had eight freebies (walks and hit-by-pitch) over three strikeouts, and had guys with multiple hits," said Burroughs.  "I feel like our offense is coming around.

"It was a great night for hits.  It was one of those nights that we had to have them to win, and our guys did that," said Burroughs.

Hunter Duvic started the game for NSU and pitched 2.1 innings with three runs allowed on six hits.  John Gault (3-1) pitched 2.2 innings and qualified for the win.  He allowed on run on three hits and three strikeouts.

Josh Morris, Cameron Brewer, Andrew Adams, and Josh Oller all worked one inning apiece.  Adams pitched a perfect inning, and Morris, Brewer, and Oller all allowed at least one run.

The Demons continue Southland Conference play with three-game series with Stephen F. Austin at Brown-Stroud Field.  Game on is slated for 6:30 on Friday, 2:00 on Saturday, and 1 o'clock on Sunday.
