Lafayette, LA (KPLC) -

The Lafayette Police Department was recognized Tuesday in a ceremony held by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. Lafayette Police were commended for their enforcement of OWI laws.

In 2013, Lafayette Police arrested 869 drivers that were suspected of impaired driving. Cpl. Tommy Aphaiyarath with the Alcohol Traffic Action Campaign Section of the LPD was individually recognized also for making 216 OWI arrests last year.

"With the assistance from a grant provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, the Lafayette Police Department continues to lead the state in removing impaired drivers from the roadway," said Lafayette Police in a news release.
