LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

A 15-year-old is in critical condition and a 12-year-old is in custody after an argument ended in a shooting Tuesday afternoon in Lake Charles, authorities said.

Lake Charles Police responded to a shooting at a home on Demarest Street at about 5:30 p.m.

According to investigators, the 12-year-old and a 15-year-old got into an argument and the 12-year-old shot the 15-year-old.

The suspect fled the scene but was arrested a short time later. The suspect is now being charged with Attempted Second-Degree murder.

"This is not a way for kids to solve problems. We know that our public is going to say what in the heck is a 12-year-old doing with a gun and why would a 12-year-old resort to such violence at such a young age? We have those same questions," said Deputy Chief Mark Kraus.

Kraus said they believe the gun is registered to the homeowner, but said it was still too early to know if the homeowner will face any charges.
