Authorities: Foul play suspected in death of Oberlin man

OBERLIN, LA (KPLC) -

The Allen Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating the homicide of 59-year-old Fred Green, the Oberlin man who was found dead inside his burning mobile home on Monday.

"Right now we do know we are investigating a homicide and that Mr. Green died from multiple stab wounds," said Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert.

Hebert said a passerby noticed smoke coming from Green's mobile home Monday morning and went inside to check on him. Hebert said that passerby, who knew Green, found him unresponsive in a bedroom.

When law enforcement and fire officials arrived to the scene, the house was completely engulfed in flames, and Green was dead.

Hebert said they have a number of people of interest as they continue to investigate what led to Green's death.

The state fire marshal is also involved in the investigation. Hebert said it is too early to exactly correlate the fire to the death, but early indications point to the fire being set.

"You have to rely a little bit more on forensic evidence -- you know, the accelerants, how it was started, when it was started, putting down time of death based on where your approximate time of death. So some of those things, you know once we start nailing those down, well, then it lets us start narrowing the scope of our search," said Hebert.

One of Green's family members told KPLC that Green was a great, friendly guy who got along with everyone. The family member said their family is reeling over who could have done this to their loved one.

    The Calcasieu Parish Public Library annual summer reading program is underway. The kick-off celebration was held at Prien Lake Park. It included registration, face painting, kite flying, bird house building and even Clifford the Big Red Dog. The reading program runs from now until July 7.
