LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

The all-clear was given at F.K. White Middle School on Monday after authorities were called in around 2:30 p.m. due to a suspicious device.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said a 12-year-old student had an old-style portable radio wrapped with tape in his backpack, and some witnesses said the boy claimed it was a bomb.

"A student reported it to a teacher who took possession of the backpack," Myers said in a news release. "The school was evacuated at that time."

The students were moved to the McNeese State football stadium and were released to their parents/guardians or put on buses to leave for the day.

The state police's bomb detection team was called to the school on East McNeese Street and determined the object was not a bomb.

Myers said the student was released to his parents with charges pending in the case.

Calcasieu Parish School Board Public Information Officer Kirby Smith said the school messenger alert system was used to notify parents and guardians that the students were moved to the stadium and that bus riders would be slightly delayed.

"The parents, teachers and administrators did an excellent job with the adjustments to the departure routine," Smith said. "It was just a safety precaution, but it went very well."
