Sulphur man accused of hitting child with belt, fishing pole

SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) -

A 41-year-old Sulphur man has been charged with two counts of cruelty to a juvenile, authorities said.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said Shane Anthony Richard was arrested Friday.

"Deputies observed numerous bruises and marks on the child," Myers said. "Deputies discovered Richard struck the child with a belt causing welts and severe bruises to his legs, buttocks and back. Deputies discovered on a previous occasion, Richard struck the victim numerous times on his legs with a fishing pole."

Myers said Richard confirmed the allegations when questioned by detectives.

Bond was set at $60,000.
