SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) -

Qualifying has reopened for the position of District 4 Councilman with the City of Sulphur, according to Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court, H. Lynn Jones II.

Qualifying will remain open from Monday, March 17 to Wednesday, March 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

R.S. 19:469 states "When a person who qualified as a candidate and has opposition in a primary election for a public office dies after the close of the qualifying period and before the time for closing the polls on the day of the primary election, the qualifying period for candidates in the primary election for that office shall reopen for candidates on the day after the death and shall close at 4:30 p.m. on the third day after the death..."

Deceased qualifier Fred Baden's name will not appear on election ballots, and any votes received by Baden will be considered void, according to state law. The full version of the above statute is available HERE.

According to the Clerk of Court's Office, Joseph "Randy" Favre is the only current qualifier for the position. If another person qualifies within the extended qualifying period, voting for this position will be placed on the May 3 election ballot. If no one else qualifies within the given timeframe, Favre will become the District 4 Councilman.
