LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) -

McNeese State University hosted the next installment of the SAGE Lecture Series on Monday. The topic was "A Voudou Priestess: The Legend and Reality of Marie Laveau."

Carolyn Morrow Long served as guest speaker. Long is a former researcher at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Long was at McNeese to discuss details from her new book about Laveau, whom Long described as a beacon for the voodoo religion and a pillar in her New Orleans community.

Long said of voodoo: "I think it's a valid religion -- just like any other religion, such as Christianity and Judaism or whatever. I wish people would respect it more and not sensationalize it as like they do on TV."

According to Long, Laveau held services for many of her followers and personally consulted with them, like many modern clergy members.
